Russian Expert: Fake Assassination Attempt on Theresa May Was Cooked Up by Cash-Strapped MI5

Political analyst, Aleksandr Nekrasov, from Great Britain joins us.

- Good day, Aleksandr. What do you know about this assassination attempt?

- Good day. From what I know, it concerns only one person, not two. 20-year-old Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman allegedly planned to blow up guarded cast-iron gates of Downing Street.

Then he wanted to get inside and inflict Theresa May several knife wounds. Well, sorry, but I start to think that I'm living in Wonderland when such reports come. Because that strikes me as rather silly. You need to know what is Downing Street and how it works. There are a lot of security forces. Getting there like this is just some kind of fantasy.

I think it's all about 400-500 fighters returning from Syria. They fought there for IS. And now they're trying to get back to normal life. All this worries both the intelligence and the government.

I find it even more terrible that there are public calls not to put them into prison, not to punish them, but to let them get back to normal life. It sounds horrible.

That's why I think that such reports about possible assassination attempts on Theresa May are made out of desperation or to hide what's going on in the country. Because people here are worried by what's happening. And the right things were said before me. At a time when Russia is accused of interfering in Britain's domestic affairs.

Britain views Russia as a threat. It sounds grotesque when there's a real terrorist threat in the country, when a terrorist attack can take place in any city. Everybody still remembers the incident when that fanatic set off a bomb in May at Ariana Grande's concert. And it was revealed soon after that the intelligence services knew the terrorist's identity, that Americans warned British Security services that this man was dangerous, that he returned from Libya, where he obviously got thorough training. And you see, they just let him go. And after all, they’re telling us how the intelligence services disrupted an assassination attempt on Theresa May.

Right now the, Home Office and MI5, the British Security Service want to get more financing. Some days ago, Andrew Parker, Director General of MI5, gave a speech in the Cabinet. He spoke about a bigger threat, he said that they have managed to prevent 9 terrorist attacks recently and demanded money, of course.

So this new terrorist attack is no coincidence. You know, I often talk to British journalists. And I perfectly know their mood. Of course, they have a rather sarcastic attitude toward this news. So I recommend viewers not feel too nervous about it.

- So, Aleksandr, as far as I can see, you consider this story fictitious and the reason is financing?

- You see, a lot of people, a lot of terrorists, they are pseudo-terrorists. They are young people who have nothing to do. They upload their videos to the Internet. One can hear appeals of all kind. They're just youngsters who do stupid things. But often, like in this case, the intelligence services actually reacts. And I think that in this case, this was an absolutely insane young man who wanted to do something impossible. I've been at Downing Street many times. Both with the gates closed and without. And I can say that it's pretty much impossible to do.

- Yes, Aleksandr, thank you. That was political analyst, Aleksandr Nekrasov, live from London.
